In Chinese brushwork painting, the plum blossom is considered one of the “Four Gentlemen” or “Four Scholarly Plants,” also representing the four seasons. These four plants are the Chinese orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum, and plum blossom. The plum blossom blooms in late winter and represents that season as well as symbolizes courage under harsh conditions. Students in this workshop will learn to paint flowering plum blossom branches using ink and watercolor on rice paper.

Monotypes are one-of-a-kind prints created by brushing a design in ink onto a blank printing then transferring that image to paper using a printing press. Join in the fun of learning to make monotypes. Embossing is also part of this process. You can add textures and combine with other mediums, such as drawing or collage, to create unique printed works of art.

This class will develop the student’s understanding of the basic concepts of drawing and the powers of observation, while working with various media and utilizing a variety of sources and environments. The instructor will focus on the fundamentals—line, shape, value, and form. Various techniques will be taught using pencil, charcoal, and conté while working from still life. Formal principals, such as shading, proportion and composition, will be covered also.
