Born in London in 1983, singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse became one of the most startling and original musical talents of the new century, achieving international fame with her hit “Rehab,” which won her Record and Song of the Year Grammys in 2008. Not so behind the scenes—considering not only tabloid reports, but also the lyrics for “Rehab”—Winehouse was struggling with addiction. In 2011, Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning at age 27, joining a long list of rock celebrities who passed at the same young age. Combining archival home movie footage and intimate testimonials from those who new Winehouse best, Amy emerges as a sympathetic and raw portrait of one of the best singers of our time. This Cannes Film Festival premiere is one of the past year’s most universally acclaimed documentaries, and a clear front-runner for the Best Documentary (Feature) Oscar.
