André Leon Talley has been one of the most instantly recognizable figures in the fashion industry for decades. Raised mostly by his grandparents in the Jim Crow South, the (physically) towering Talley went on to intern at the Met’s Fashion Institute, and answer phones at Andy Warhol’s Factory—before becoming one of the most influential editorial-page voices in fashion journalism. Kate Novack’s intimate, involving, and ultimately inspiring new documentary traces the astonishing rise of the barrier-breaking icon, highlighting the formative roles played by both his beloved grandmother and the Black Church of his adolescent years. Set during the anxious run-up to the 2016 presidential election, The Gospel According to André features a wealth of archival footage and interviews with everyone from Tom Ford and Anna Wintour to Will.i.am and Whoopi Goldberg.
