Nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Actress (Shinobu Terajima), the darkly comedic Oh Lucy! tells the story of Setsuko, an unmarried, unfulfilled middle-aged woman in a dull corner of Tokyo. Everything changes when she attends an unconventional English language class, in a seedy massage parlor, led by a handsome, if strange, American teacher named John (Josh Hartnett, Pearl Harbor). Given a big hug, a wig, and a new name—Lucy—by her hunky teacher, Setsuko sets off for Southern California when she discovers that John has run away with a former student. Possessed of a black undercurrent that emerges especially after she reunites with her teacher, this “against-all-odds charmer,” in the words of the New York Times‘ Manohla Dargis, ultimately finds an unexpected note of optimism after everything seems to have fallen apart.
