Camille, an introverted teenage skateboarder (newcomer Rachelle Vinberg) from Long Island, meets and befriends an all-girl, New York City-based skateboarding crew called Skate Kitchen. Energized by a sense of belonging and new-found confidence in her skills, Camille finds her life complicated by a falling-out with her protective mother and her growing romantic feelings for a mysterious skater boy (Jaden Smith). The first narrative feature from The Wolfpack director Crystal Moselle, Skate Kitchen was produced in close collaboration with young female skateboarders, lending the film a remarkable sense of authenticity that comes through in both its hypnotic skating sequences and its heartbreaking and hilarious true-to-life dialogue. Deftly balancing atmospheric, documentary-style filmmaking with the most energizing portrait of female adolescence since Lady Bird, Skate Kitchen is vibrantly alive to the present moment, while remaining endearingly universal.
