In 1971, Reed was hired as an assistant professor at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C., a position he held for a decade. Reed began creating oil pastel works on paper in 1973, explaining how he “liked the idea of feeling the touch of the paper, the texture, and the surface.” Inspired by the expressive potential of the medium, Reed explored an amorphous and fluid drawing technique that incorporates sinuous grey and black lines amongst a whirl of bright colors.
