Magnificent Beauty: Georgia O’Keeffe and the Art of the Flower

VID148

Georgia O’Keeffe
American, 1887-1986

The Black Iris, 1926
Oil on canvas

Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Gift of The Burnett Foundation

https://dd60fnwj0u16e.cloudfront.net/TheBlackIris.mp3

Visual Description: This is a painting, measuring 9 inches tall and 7 inches wide, of a close-up and rotated view of a black iris flower. The entire canvas is filled with the flower’s ruffled petals, one of which bisects the canvas vertically. The external petals are a range of colors, including light heather gray, charcoal gray, and lilac. At the center of the canvas is the flower’s sepal, a rounded maroon form with a black center, outlined in charcoal gray.

Extended Label Text: Created by O’Keeffe the same year she completed the much larger, frontally composed Black Iris that is now part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Alfred Stieglitz Collection (see here), the clam-like white petal in this nine-by-seven-inch oil painting discretely conceals much of the flower’s distinctive black sepal. By cropping and rotating the petal ninety degrees, the smaller painting is far more abstract in its effect. O’Keeffe’s micro-composition indeed borders on pure abstraction with its combination of pink-tinted whites, grays, and deep blacks—punctuated by a single pop of maroon—not necessarily recognizable to the viewer as a flower.

El Iris Negro, 1926
Óleo sobre lienzo

Museo Georgia O’Keeffe.
