Visual Description: This is a black-and-white photograph, approximately 1 ½ feet tall and just over 1 foot wide, of two white calla lilies arranged next to each other and viewed from above. The calla lilies have an arrowhead shape and their spathes, or petals, curve around the central spadix, a finger-like protrusion. Dark, arrow-shaped leaves appear above the calla lilies themselves. The background is a deep, featureless black.

Extended Label Text: An example of Cunningham’s fascination for double images, this celebrated photograph is a striking close-up of two white calla lilies against a dark background, seemingly suspended in space. The flower on the right is glowing from illumination while the other, in contrast, is shadowed and slightly turned away from the viewer. Cunningham photographed the calla lily repeatedly, as evidenced by Calla Lily Leaves nearby. From the delicate lines on the white spathes to the individual veins and glossy texture of the leaves, both photographs exemplify her sharp-focus style and attention to detail and precision.
