Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer

The Greatest Show on Earth costume

Designed by Edith Head, Dorothy Jeakins (American, 1914-1995), and Miles White (American, 1914-2000)

Costume worn by Cornel Wilde as The Great Sebastian in the film “The Greatest Show on Earth”, 1952

The Collection of Motion Picture Costume Design: Larry McQueen

Visual Description: This is a circus performance costume consisting of a heavily decorated tunic, a cape, and olive-green tights. The tunic and cape are made out of a shiny teal floral brocade and both are studded with fake clear, emerald-green, and sapphire-blue jewels. The front of the tunic is decorated with three sets of embellished navy-blue cord fastenings on either side of a large zipper. The cape has exaggerated, sloping shoulders and is lined with watermelon-pink silk satin.

Extended Label Text: The Greatest Show on Earth, starring Betty Hutton and Cornel Wilde and directed by Cecil B. DeMille, is set within the dramatic world of the circus. This garment is the signature piece of Wilde’s character “The Great Sebastian,” and appears throughout the film. Head remembered the challenges of designing for the film, for which she received an Oscar nomination: “I thought I knew quite a bit about clothes, but I find I know nothing about designing for a circus—for girls flying through the air, hanging to a strap by their teeth, or crawling all over elephants.”
