Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer

Funny Face costume

Designed by Edith Head and Hubert de Givenchy (French, 1927-2018)

The Collection of Motion Picture Costume Design: Larry McQueen

Visual Description: This is a two-piece cream-colored suit made up of a jacket with three-quarter sleeves and an ankle-length straight skirt.

Extended Label Text: One of the biggest controversies of Head’s career involved French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy. For the 1954 film Sabrina, Audrey Hepburn selected clothing from his fashion line, while Head was relegated to designing a few simple outfits and managing some of Givenchy’s creations. However, since most of Givenchy’s designs predated the production, he did not receive credit for the film. When Hepburn made her next high-fashion film, Funny Face (1957), Givenchy was given the script and designed clothes specifically for Hepburn’s character, including this beige suit, this time receiving screen credit. Head and Givenchy shared an Academy Award nomination, but they did not win.
