Sky Chord

Sam Gilliam
American, 1933-2022

Sky Chord, 1966
Acrylic on canvas

Museum purchase, Washington Gallery of Modern Art Collection, 1968

Visual Description

This is a painting that measures roughly seven feet tall and seven feet wide. The canvas is saturated with paint, creating soft, diffused areas of various colors. In the lower left quadrant of the canvas is an area of cobalt-blue paint that merges into an area of sky blue in the lower right quadrant. Along the left-hand side of the canvas above the cobalt-blue paint is an area of seafoam green. In the upper right area of the canvas is a large field of brick red paint. While most of the red paint bleeds into the areas of blue, creating areas of dark gray, streaks of paint are visible in certain areas. In the upper left quadrant of the canvas, the dark reddish-gray streaks spread onto a background of sky blue, gradually fading into it.

Extended Label Text

The physically imposing and emotionally intense Sky Chord is among the first works in which Sam Gilliam entirely abandoned sharp edges and began exploring spontaneous methods of applying paint. In this work, Gilliam poured thinned acrylic onto an unprimed, stretched canvas. He removed the stretcher and suspended the canvas, leaving the paint to settle overnight and allowing gravity to impact the composition. Gilliam then sponged, mopped, and splattered his pool of paint before re-stretching the canvas. The techniques he explored here anticipate his later period where he painted on raw canvas and draped and suspended the finished works.

Sam Gilliam
Estadounidense, 1933-2022
