This gallery presents a range of still-life compositions, which portray natural or human-made objects such as flowers, fruit, food, or vessels, often arranged for close looking. Traditionally, still lifes might depict arrangements of natural abundance or prized possessions. In contrast, modern examples expand the genre to include household goods, consumer products, or more abstract interpretations. Many of the works in this gallery display some form of realistic depiction, from the meticulous style of seventeenth-century Flemish painting to American Realism of the late twentieth century, in which artists created art that was highly detailed, executed with precision, and hyperrealistic in its effect.
