Set and shot around the Christmas Eve holiday, Eric Rohmer’s My Night at Maud’s was one of the most influential and widely discussed films of the 1960s. Jean-Louis (Jean-Louis Trintignant, Three Colors Trilogy: Red), a practicing Catholic, runs into an old Communist friend while at work in Clermont-Ferrand, France. The latter, Vidal, in turn introduces his friend to Maud (Françoise Fabian), a liberal divorcee who invites the pair over to her home late one evening. There, they engage in exceptionally literate conversation, including the topic of the writings of theologian Blaise Pascal, before Jean-Louis’s beliefs are tested by the sensuous and beautiful Maud. Filmed on location by the great Néstor Almendros in lustrous black-and-white, a medium perfectly suited to wintertime in the French provinces, My Night at Maud’s stands as the centerpiece of the director’s famed Six Moral Tales series.
