Released six months after the end of prohibition and one month before the enforcement of the Hayes Code, The Thin Man is a thoroughly grown-up caper soaked in gin and double-entendres. Based on Dashiell Hammett’s eponymous novel, the film follows free-wheeling ex-detective Nick Charles (William Powell) and his witty wife Nora (Myrna Loy), who have arrived to New York for the Christmas holiday, along with their mischievous terrier Asta. Following a string of raucous Christmas celebrations, Nick is reluctantly roused from early retirement by the mysterious disappearance of an eccentric inventor and an escalating string of murders. Determined to crack the case and have a little fun at the same time, Nick and Nora team up to out-think and out-drink a colorful assortment of cops, crooks, and scheming relatives. Charming, irreverent, and unabashedly romantic, The Thin Man is like is like a mug of hot chocolate with a shot of whiskey.
