One of the finest films to ever receive the Best Picture Oscar, Billy Wilder’s The Apartment stars Jack Lemmon as C.C. Baxter, an ambitious, but lonely insurance company cog. In exchange for a promotion, Baxter lends his Upper West Side apartment to his boss, Mr. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray), for his latest extramarital affair. Baxter, however, is devastated when he learns that Sheldrake’s new mistress is Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), the cute elevator operator at their office building. The Apartment develops over the Christmas season, drawing both its sentimentality and its melancholy from the holidays. Directed by Hollywood giant Billy Wilder (Double Indemnity, Some Like It Hot), The Apartment features one of the screen’s most memorable Christmas parties; but truly, it is the emotional impact of the film’s New Year Eve set-piece that ensures the film’s enduring place in the movie canon.
