Directed with uttermost artistry by the great Chilean-born filmmaker Raúl Ruiz, Time Regained skips backward and forward in time, sometimes within the space of a single shot, as we encounter the many lives and loves of the legendary French writer. Catherine Deneuve, John Malkovich, Emmanuelle Beart, and Vincent Perez are among the many high-profile international performers who bring the author’s memorable inner world into existence. Time Regained is an enormous step up in budget and scale for the surrealist-inclined Ruiz, the director of more than one hundred films. It is also one of the best works of his singular career.
