Following the death of their beloved grandmother Annette, a brother and sister undertake an archaeological investigation of the New Jersey home she occupied for more than sixty years. The objects they unearth, combined with an archive of family photos, home videos, and a wonderfully candid series of interviews filmed during the last decade of their grandmother’s life, open a fascinating window onto 20th century America, while painting an engaging portrait of Annette as a vibrant woman, a gifted fashion designer, and a loving matriarch. Evoking Wes Anderson’s meticulous mid-century aesthetic and the whimsical, first-person address of Agnes Varda’s film essays, this magical-realist documentary pushes the boundaries of the nonfiction form, while telling a movingly universal story.
