Largely filmed in Enid, Oklahoma, Wildlife marks the phenomenally assured, critically lauded directorial debut of actor Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine). Set in early 1960s Montana, the film follows 14-year-old Joe, who is forced to confront harsh adult realities when his affable golf pro father Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal) loses his job and sets off to fight wildfires along the Canadian border. Left behind, Joe’s ambitious mother Jeanette (Carey Mulligan) seeks to escape her drab domestic life by pursuing a relationship with a wealthy businessman. Adapted with poignant restraint by Dano and actress Zoe Kazan (The Big Sick) from a 1990 novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Ford, Wildlife is a radiant, emotionally complex, exquisitely understated meditation on the fragile ties that bind families together, and the internal and external pressures that drive them apart. Anchored by Carey Mulligan’s fearless, Oscar-caliber performance, Wildlife is an early awards season contender worth celebrating.
