In autumn 1980, Reed was a visiting artist with the printmaking department at Arizona State University, one of the most innovative printmaking centers in the country at that time. Reed’s collaboration with master printers at the school led to his series known as the “Gouache paintings” (ca. 1980-1994), which combines painting with printing. To create these works, Reed painted gouache (opaque watercolor) onto a sheet of plexiglass, then pressed the sheet onto a piece of paper, creating an impression, or print.
