Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer

Shelley Winters for A Place in the Sun

Costume worn by Shelley Winters as Alice Tripp in the film “A Place in the Sun”, 1951

The Paramount Pictures Archive

https://dvew4etk36zxg.cloudfront.net/Edith+Head+Shelley+Winters.mp3

Visual Description: This is a plaid dress underneath a camel-colored jacket with large lapels. The plaid print is primarily pine-green in color with stripes of white, seafoam green, and dark jungle green. The dress is trimmed with white ribbon with a zig-zag pattern and has lapels that extend out horizontally over the collar of the jacket. Pinned to the jacket’s collar is a fake, light-blue floral boutonniere.

Extended Label Text: Director George Stevens told Edith Head to design costumes for A Place in the Sun that were true to real-world people rather than relying upon stereotypes and Hollywood ideals. However, with the film’s release coming two years after Head’s costume work, she was challenged to make clothing that was neither too trendy in 1949 nor appeared too dated in 1951.

Head ultimately won an Academy Award for her design for this black-and-white film, creating costumes for both Elizabeth Taylor’s spoiled teenager and Shelley Winters’s young factory worker.
