Picasso and the Progressive Proof: Linocut Prints from a Private Collection

Visual Description

This is a linocut print, measuring almost one foot tall and a foot and a half wide. The print features several flat, amorphous figures lounging in a landscape. In the foreground is a reclining tan figure playing a flute alongside a kid goat and two figures dancing amongst rolling, dark green hills. Behind them is a seated white figure, outlined in black and sky blue, resting alongside a sky-blue lake and black mountains in the distance. The sky is a chaotic mix of sky-blue and black lines overlaid with bursts of feathery white lines that represent strong winds.

In the earlier state nearby, the image format is the same except for the presence of the black mountains and flute, the black outlines of the figures and landscape, and the underlying black lines in the sky.

Extended Label Text

With the overlay of the final registering color—black—on top of the preceding print, the composition here sharpens and comes alive. The frolicking figures, accompanied by a kid goat, dance to the tune of the flutist on the left. Near the sky-blue lake, the seated onlooker regards the glories of the wind swirling above in the sky—the Provençal mistral—and the happy dancers below.
