Magnificent Beauty: Georgia O’Keeffe and the Art of the Flower

VID7

Georgia O’Keeffe
American, 1887-1986

Calla Lily for Alfred, 1927
Oil on canvas board

Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Gift of Mr. And Mrs. Eugene V. Thaw

https://dd60fnwj0u16e.cloudfront.net/CallaLilyForAlfred.mp3

Visual Description: This is a painting of an overhead view of a calla lily, measuring a foot tall and 6 inches wide, set against a featureless black and gray background. The calla lily’s spathe, or petal, is shaped like an arrow and is creamy white. The flower curves around the yellow spadix at its center, which resembles a finger. A green ring surrounds the spadix.

Extended Label Text: The Alfred in this painting’s title refers to Alfred Stieglitz, a leading photographer of the early twentieth century and the gallerist who first showed O’Keeffe’s work in New York. O’Keeffe and Stieglitz married in 1924 and remained together until his death. Stieglitz produced hundreds of photographs of his wife, including several nudes. Stieglitz nonetheless was shocked when he saw O’Keeffe’s flower paintings. Calla lilies had anatomical connotations, especially after Sigmund Freud observed that they contained both male and female features. While the flower’s orientation suggests human anatomy with its finger-like spadix wrapped by an expansive leaf, O’Keeffe denied this association.

Lirio de Cala para Alfred, 1927
Óleo sobre lienzo

Museo Georgia O’Keeffe. Obsequio del Sr. y la Sra. Eugene V. Thaw
