Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer

https://dvew4etk36zxg.cloudfront.net/Designing_for_the_Character.mp3

DESIGNING FOR THE CHARACTER

“I don’t consider myself a designer. I’m a scientist using fashion as the catalyst to bring out the best in a person, and to help develop a whole new character.” – Edith Head

When Edith Head’s career began to flourish at Paramount in the 1930s and ’40s, it was a field dominated by mostly male designers wanting to create their own recognizable and distinctive designs. For Head, the necessities of the film came first. She was most interested in interpreting the script and designing clothes to suit both the character in the film and the person wearing it rather than trying to create a distinctive “Edith Head look.”

Head consulted extensively with the actresses she worked with, which was virtually every top star in Hollywood. She had an innate understanding of the transformative power of clothing, and she took the time to learn each actress’s traits, study their bodies and movements, and listen to their personal preferences. Actresses were frequently delighted by how flattering a costume designed by Head was while simultaneously aiding their transformation into the film character. On view in this gallery are formal gowns and eveningwear designed by Head that helped bring elegance, confidence, and sex appeal to the big screen.
