Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer

DESIGNING FOR THE MUSICAL AND TECHNICOLOR

Advances in color film, such as the development of Technicolor and widescreen formats in the 1930s and ’40s, had major impacts on film production and costume design. For black-and-white films, sharp tonal contrasts and metallic fabrics were frequently employed by costume designers to create visual interest onscreen. With color film, designers like Edith Head had to be more cognizant of the types of fabrics, textures, patterns, and color combinations, not only for the visual impact of the costume itself but also for how it looked alongside the set and lighting design. Costume and set designers were encouraged to use as much color as possible to take full advantage of the format and to help draw audiences to movie theaters.

Color film also lent itself to the creation of flashy musical productions. After rival studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) scored multiple musical box office hits, Paramount increased its production to keep pace. This gave Head more opportunities to design spectacular costumes while presenting a new challenge: to design clothing that was at once eye-catching but also practical and durable for the song and dance numbers that distinguished the musical genre.
