John Gerrard

Collection of Carl & Marilynn Thoma

Visual Description

This is a computer-generated animation that plays on a wall-mounted monitor with a white metal frame. The animation depicts a rotating view of a rural town in an arid landscape with a dust storm looming in the background. The town consists of widely spaced buildings in various shades of brown and gunmetal gray that are flanked on the left by grain towers and on the right by train silos and a water tower. The dust storm is a colossal dark taupe cloud that extends across the landscape’s horizon.

Extended Label Text

Based on an archival photograph that captures the infamous Black Sunday dust storm of 1935, Dust Storm (Manter, Kansas) is a work of animation in which a dust storm perpetually looms in the distance of a simulated contemporary landscape. Gerrard used thousands of on-site photographs and satellite data to construct the environment as accurately as possible, capturing even small details like powerlines and fencing.
