Visual Description

This is a painting, measuring roughly three feet tall and four feet wide, depicting an abstracted figure set against a collection of geometric shapes and lines on a brick-red background. Strong black, purple, and hot pink lines form brick-red semi-circles, bright red rectangles, and a smaller, dark mustard rectangle in the middle of the canvas. The top, bottom, and right sides of the painting have a border made of light gray feathery brushstrokes. Throughout most of the painting, the brushstrokes are visible slashes on the canvas and, in certain areas, feature drips of paint. The figure’s body is made up of simplified angular shapes and is a grayish-purple color. Around the figure and across its body are splotches of hot pink and purple paint. Overlaid on their head is a slate-gray mask that resembles a human skull.  In one hand, the figure holds a thin, hot pink rod, possibly a paintbrush, that ends in a stroke of indigo paint.

Extended Label Text

Prior to 1964, Oaxacan-born painter of Zapotec heritage Rufino Tamayo spent much of his time living in New York and Paris, where he absorbed and interpreted the visual language of European Modernism. In El pintor [The Painter], Tamayo favors the style of Cubism, employing its geometric forms, mask-like facial features, and parallel lines similar to those used in its still-life depictions of guitars. However, it is the sandy-textured reds of the negative space—the color red features prominently in Tamayo’s paintings—that force their way toward the viewer in this stylistically abstract depiction of an artist at work.

Óleo sobre lienzo

Donación del Sr. y la Sra. R.A. Young, 2002
