Visual Description: This is a sepia-toned photograph of a group of plant leaves, measuring roughly 1 foot tall and 9 ½ inches wide. The photograph is completely dominated by broad, oblong leaves with deep, vertical grooves. Shadows darken the leaves on the left side of the photograph.
Extended Label Text: In this photograph, the false hellebore’s leaves are enlarged, creating a monumental composition that abstracts the plant and makes it almost unrecognizable. This magnification, as well as Cunningham’s use of dramatic lighting, highlights the deep grooves of the plant’s pleated leaves, giving texture and dimension to the image. This photograph also demonstrates Cunningham’s extensive botanical knowledge; as with her images of magnolia flowers, she would watch the plant and wait to photograph it at the exact moment of growth before it matured, and its leaves fell off.
