Land Use: Humanity’s Interaction with Nature

https://d3jcivbn24nosj.cloudfront.net/LandUseIntro.mp3

Land Use: Humanity’s Interaction with Nature

This gallery features modern and contemporary paintings, photographs, video art, and digital art that relate to humanity’s use of and interaction with the environment. The phrase “land use” describes how humans use land for various economic and cultural endeavors, including agricultural, residential, industrial, mining, and recreational purposes. Wide-ranging in style, all of the artworks in this installation revolve around the idea of land use, though some more literally than others, as is the case with Ed Ruscha’s LAND USE featured nearby.

While some of the more traditional landscapes in this gallery depict the common land use of farming, John Gerrard’s animation of a dust storm instead focuses on the environmental consequences of certain agricultural practices. This gallery also features several works relating to energy production from nature, capturing various power plants, coal mines, and an oil field with its resulting sinkhole. Additionally, a handful of photographs demonstrate ways that humanity has physically transformed land in the past through carving, creating tunnels, and using the earth to build structures like temples. Finally, Andy Goldsworthy’s video Hedge crawl touches upon Environmental Art and how its artists choose to work harmoniously with nature without disrupting it.
