Magnificent Beauty: Georgia O’Keeffe and the Art of the Flower

https://dd60fnwj0u16e.cloudfront.net/IntroMagnificentBeauty.mp3

In Victorian Britain, different types of flowers held special symbolism and meaning. The calla lily, for instance, was associated with “magnificent beauty.” Imported to the United States during the mid-nineteenth century, the calla lily gained popularity amongst American artists like Georgia O’Keeffe and photographer Imogen Cunningham for its sleek, curvilinear form. Magnificent Beauty: Georgia O’Keeffe and the Art of the Flower examines explorations of flowers, such as the calla lily, in painting and photography by O’Keeffe and Cunningham, highlighting their unique interpretations of the traditional subject matter.

O’Keeffe redefined the tradition of floral still-life painting by incorporating techniques of photography (a relatively new medium in the early twentieth century) into her works, choosing to depict the subject cropped and at close range to focus on color and form. O’Keeffe sought to capture how she saw flowers and encourage others to take the time to view them. Her resulting works often straddle the line between representation and abstraction.

Cunningham had extensive knowledge of plants from working in the botany department at the University of Washington, where she studied chemistry. Finding herself home with her young children, she began photographing the flowers in her California garden in the early 1920s. Though Cunningham also portrayed flowers in close-up, her sharp-focus photographs instead call attention to the interplay of light and shadow as well as the subject’s intricate details, captured with scientific precision.

Magnificent Beauty demonstrates how each artist transformed the traditional subject with a modernist, and at times abstracted, take on the natural world.
