Picasso and the Progressive Proof: Linocut Prints from a Private Collection

PICASSO AND ARCADIA: THE BACCHANAL

Even in this late period of his career, Picasso opened up a new avenue of visual imagery—the bacchanal. In November 1959, Picasso produced twelve linocuts on the subject. While a bacchanal denotes a frenzied drunken celebration inspired by Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, Picasso focused on dancers and music makers. For his association of Arcadia—a pastoral place of harmony and perfection—Picasso specifically referenced the South of France with the mistral, a glorious wind, in the sky.

Picasso’s personal reckoning with the Old Masters and respect for Classical Antiquity are combined with his love for the region he lived in late in life. An essential visual reference in this pastoral scene is Venetian Renaissance painter Titian’s Le Concert champêtre [The Pastoral Concert]. Picasso knew this painting well from his many visits to the Louvre. Titian’s painting is one of the best-known references to utopian Arcadia. Picasso similarly employed the motif of the reclining female nude playing the flute featured in Titian’s scene to designate his own beloved landscape as a place of harmony and perfection. Bacchanale avec chevreau et spectateur [Bacchanal with Kid Goat and Onlooker] illustrates not only Picasso’s profound knowledge of earlier art but also the legacy of the visual tradition he inherited, both of which permeate his artistic vision.
