Picasso and the Progressive Proof: Linocut Prints from a Private Collection

https://picrod.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/Picasso+Intro.mp3

PICASSO AND THE PROGRESSIVE PROOF: LINOCUT PRINTS FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), one of the greatest artistic figures in history, was not only a prolific painter and sculptor, but also a prodigious printmaker. In collaboration with his printers, Picasso created over 2,400 prints throughout his career. This exhibition focuses on a critical moment in Picasso’s late printmaking, specifically his work with linoleum block prints, or linocuts, of which he produced around 200 in the last twelve years of his life.

Picasso and the Progressive Proof presents broad themes that engaged Picasso throughout his life, including his competition with the Old Masters; his Spanish heritage as reflected in the corrida, or bullfight; and his interest in mythology, and the Classical past. These themes figure prominently and overlap in the three prints explored in the exhibition: Portrait de jeune fille d’après Cranach le jeune II [Portrait of a Young Girl after Cranach the Younger II] (Old Masters), Pique II [Pike II] (bullfights), and Bacchanale avec chevreau et spectateur [Bacchanal with Kid Goat and Onlooker] (mythology).

Through the artist’s conceptual and technical innovations during his last great creative outpouring, Picasso reinvented yet another art form—the linocut.

All works in the exhibition are from a private collection unless otherwise noted.
