Postwar Abstraction

https://d3jcivbn24nosj.cloudfront.net/PostwarAbstractionIntro.mp3

Postwar Abstraction

Postwar Abstraction highlights a period of remarkable creativity when ideas of abstraction and the nature and limits of artistic mediums were being contested by artists. Associated with movements as diverse as Abstract Expressionism, the Bay Area Figurative School, Color Field painting, Hard-Edge painting, Op Art, and Minimalism, artists continually sought to redefine what painting was and what it could be. This installation primarily focuses on the various ways that artists—especially those in the United States—approached abstraction during the postwar period.

The variety of works in these galleries ranges across a spectrum of styles, from expressive and gestural to austere and mechanical. However, all of these works share a commitment to abstraction. By the late 1940s and early 1950s, many artists who had once depicted figures or landscapes considered representation obsolete. In their view, abstraction alone fulfilled the prerogatives of advanced painting after World War II. Nonetheless, many of these same artists toggled between abstraction and representation, simultaneously creating abstract, semi-abstract, and representational works of art. Works fitting each of these descriptions are on view in this installation.

For many artists, their focus became the ways in which paint and pigment are applied to the surface of the artwork. In other cases, the works partially derive their meaning from the elimination of the methods of application. Together, the variety of techniques and styles of abstraction on view constitute one of the most diverse and creative periods in American art.
