Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer

Rear Window costume

Costume worn by Grace Kelly as Lisa Carol Fremont in the film “Rear Window”, 1954

The Collection of Motion Picture Costume Design: Larry McQueen

Visual Description: This is an accordion-pleated black cocktail dress with short sleeves. The dress’s skirt ends at the mannequin’s mid-calf. A layer of see-through black organza makes up the collar and sleeves of the bodice and twists at the bust. A shiny black belt cinches the dress’s waist and the mannequin wears a necklace made up of three strands of pearls.

Extended Label Text: For Rear Window, Alfred Hitchcock and Edith Head’s second collaboration after 1946’s Notorious, the legendary Hollywood director cast Grace Kelly as Lisa Fremont, a high-society fashion magazine editor, which called for an extremely stylish wardrobe. Head designed this black organza cocktail dress with transparent sleeves and a full accordion-pleated skirt, remembering how “Hitch wanted her to look like a piece of Dresden china, something slightly untouchable.”

Head and Kelly formed a long-lasting friendship and frequently wrote each other letters. “If I had to pick a favorite actress, it would be Grace Kelly,” said the designer.
