Ellsworth Kelly
American, 1923-2015

Red Blue, 1963
Oil on canvas

Museum purchase, Washington Gallery of Modern Art Collection, 1968

Visual Description

This is a painting that measures roughly seven and a half feet tall and almost six feet wide. At the center of the canvas is a bright red vertical strip of paint that extends from the top and to the bottom of the canvas. The vertical stripe curves at both ends, giving it a cylindrical appearance. The remaining canvas on either side of the cylinder is a vibrant cobalt blue.

Extended Label Text

Ellsworth Kelly’s work from this period is hard-edged, flat, and without a trace of the artist’s hand. In Red Blue, the artist juxtaposed two bold colors to create a painting in which color and shape are one. While the bright, solid colors are clearly two-dimensional, the red strip separates from the blue as if taking a step toward the viewer. Red Blue is Kelly’s attempt to free shape from the background and redefine its relationship with color and to the space around it.

Ellsworth Kelly
Estadounidense, 1923-2015

Rojo Azul, 1963
