Soil and Subsoil

Soil and Subsoil, 1946
Oil on canvas

Visual Description

This is a painting, measuring approximately three feet tall and four and a half feet wide, of a rural landscape. In the foreground, an eroded field slopes downward and meets a calm body of water, steely blue with small ripples in the lower right-hand corner of the canvas. The eroded ground dominates the canvas and is sparsely covered in bright green grass tinged with yellow. The top layer of soil underneath the grass is a terracotta red color, and the bottom layer of subsoil is corn yellow. A broken and rusty barbed wire fence runs horizontally across the canvas, one of its wooden posts lying partially submerged in the water.

Extended Label Text

Soil and Subsoil exposes the catastrophic environmental consequences of agricultural practices such as un-terraced farming, where plowing and planting run parallel to natural water sources. The gnarled and fallen barbed wire helps to measure the extreme level of erosion impacting this scene’s ravaged farmland. Soil and Subsoil represents a composite of Vernon red-soil landscapes that Hogue encountered between Oklahoma City and Tulsa after taking over as the head of the University of Tulsa art department in 1945.
