Visual Description

This is a computer simulation, projected onto a wall, of a solar thermal power tower surrounded by 10,000 mirrors. The mirrors are arranged in a concentric formation around the tower, which sits slightly off-center in the formation. The tower and mirrors are in a barren desert landscape. As the simulation progresses, the viewpoint alternates between ground-level and satellite views. The scene also transitions from day to night, with the thousands of mirrors adjusting their positions according to the location of the sun.

Extended Label Text

John Gerrard creates digital artworks that often explore isolated locations and power and energy systems. Solar Reserve is a computer simulation of a real power plant that utilizes 10,000 mirrors to convert energy from sunlight and generate electricity. The viewpoint alternates between ground-level and satellite views every sixty minutes, producing a dynamic composition of different perspectives, rotating mirrors, and striking plays of light and shadow. Though it evokes virtual gaming, the computer-generated landscape was painstakingly constructed and even replicates the actual positions of the sun and moon in the sky at the site in Nevada.
