Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer

The Heiress costume

Costume worn by Olivia de Havilland as Catherine Sloper in the film “The Heiress”, 1949

The Collection of Motion Picture Costume Design: Larry McQueen

Visual Description: This is a long burgundy red gown with a fitted bodice, bell sleeves, and a full skirt made up of four ruffled tiers. The edges of the sleeves, the collar, the bodice, and the skirt’s hems are trimmed with a ruched iridescent red and gold fabric that subtly shifts between the two colors as one moves around the costume. Underneath the gown’s bodice is a cream-colored lace shirt with a ruffled collar, which also peeks out of the gown’s cuffs.

Extended Label Text: Edith Head won her first Oscar for costume design in 1949 for The Heiress, a historical drama set in mid-nineteenth-century New York City, calling the film “possibly the most perfect picture I have ever done.”  Director William Wyler was adamant about historical accuracy and sent Head to research historical textiles in New York City.

Head designed the clothes to complement the development of the main character, Catherine Sloper, played by Olivia de Havilland. Throughout the film, Catherine changes from an awkward and insecure young girl, wearing slightly ill-fitting clothes with too many ruffles, to an embittered, empowered, and severely tailored woman at the end.
