Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer

The Perils of Pauline costume

Costume worn by Betty Hutton as Pearl White in the film “The Perils of Pauline”, 1947

The Collection of Motion Picture Costume Design: Larry McQueen

Visual Description: This is a two-piece turquoise blue beaded gown with a fitted bodice and full-length sleeves. The gown’s bodice has a peplum that extends out from the waist and the floor-length skirt has a slit at the front.

Extended Label Text: The Perils of Pauline is a biographical film about 1920s silent film star Pearl White. Head referred to old costumes that had been worn by White during her career to achieve authenticity. Created for actress Betty Hutton for the spirited musical production number at the end of the film, this two-piece gown is solidly covered in blue bugle beads. The costume design department employed talented beaders, who would sometimes take six to eight months to complete a beaded dress such as this. A second dress made with light-weight sequins rather than beads was worn by Hutton’s stunt double.
