Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer

The Ten Commandments costume

Designed by Edith Head et. Al.

Costume worn by Nina Foch as Bithiah in the film “The Ten Commandments”, 1956

The Collection of Motion Picture Costume Design: Larry McQueen

Visual Description: This is an accordion-pleated shimmering black and gold gown with a v-shaped neckline. The gown’s fabric sparkles under the light and its shoulders drape down along the upper arm. At the gown’s bust, waistline, and down the front are chained pewter medallions. A gold necklace with jade-green scarabs and a golden disk frames the dress’s neckline.

Extended Label Text: Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments (1956) was a remake of his 1923 silent version and became one of the most expensive films ever made. Because the film was so large (with over 15,000 extras cast), costume design was one of the biggest undertakings. Five costume designers led the costuming unit, with Head designing for the principal female leads. The designers worked with an expert who had done eleven years of research in an effort to ensure historical authenticity, and they spent months of preparation going through endless sketches with sketch artists. The film was nominated for Best Costume Design, Color.
