EDITH HEAD AT UNIVERSAL STUDIOS
In the 1960s, many costume designers no longer “belonged” to one studio or another, instead becoming freelancers moving from picture to picture. When Gulf + Western bought Paramount in 1966, Head believed she would be forced out of the studio. In 1967, at the age of seventy, she negotiated a contract with Universal, where Hitchcock was working. Her last Oscar win came for The Sting in 1973.
During her later years at Universal, Head was more valuable for publicity purposes and her connections in Hollywood than for designing costumes for films. She was given a private bungalow that had a large metal cutout of a dress form and her signature on the outside. She was even known to meet trams of tourists on the Universal lot for a studio tour.
