Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer

What a Way to Go! Costume

Costume worn by Shirley MacLaine as Louisa May Foster in the film “What a Way to Go!”, 1964

Collection of Greg Schreiner

https://dvew4etk36zxg.cloudfront.net/CostumeShirley.mp3

Visual Description: This is a floor-length emerald-green satin gown. The gown is low-cut and the fabric below the bust is ruched. Several long lengths of fabric are attached to the back of the dress and trail behind it.

Extended Label Text: This costume worn by Shirley MacLaine in What a Way to Go! appears during an over-the-top extended montage sequence satirizing “those glamorous Hollywood movies all about love and what’ll she wear next?” as MacLaine’s character describes them in voiceover. The film’s script called for seventy-two different costumes (and hairstyles) for MacLaine’s role alone, and Head designed each one more outrageous and creative than the next. The film had the largest budget of Head’s career with over $500,000 spent solely on MacLaine’s costumes.
