About Julie and Her OKCMOA Connection
OKCMOA has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up in Oklahoma City and have a large extended family. My grandparents were not artists themselves, but were very involved in the arts, and fostered a love and appreciation of art in their children and grandchildren through the years. I spent many weekends growing up in the galleries, visiting local art studios, and attending movies in the OKCMOA theater. My husband and I even visited the Museum on our wedding day with our immediate family and best friends and enjoyed brunch in the former Museum Cafe between our morning ceremony and evening reception.
Now as adults with children of our own, we often pop into the Museum before a visit to the Downtown library, or to attend a class or evening event. The Museum is accessible, friendly, and has taught us all to take the time to slow down and appreciate beauty even in a hectic week full of everyday activities.
Why Moderns?
Being part of OKCMOA Moderns has been an incredibly enriching experience in my life, reaching well beyond the walls of the Museum. As a group, Moderns is full of dynamic, interesting and engaging people of all ages. I’ve enjoyed being able to meet and learn from professionals in creative, civic, and corporate roles that all come together through a shared love of the arts, our city, and a desire to help extend the outreach of the Museum’s impact on our community. I’ve made some wonderful lifelong friends through attending Moderns events and ultimately joining the board.
I believe the Moderns board continues to get better and better, and our connection with the Museum staff and common goals of engaging with a wider audience are very exciting. We have a great group of people that are working to create fun, educational, and social events that are both entertaining and enlightening.
I’m equally excited about the upcoming Paul Reed: A Retrospective and Discovering Ansel Adams—I am a huge fan of modern art and the colorist works, and Ansel Adams was really my first introduction to black and white photography as art. The majestic composition of his work is really breathtaking.
