August’s lineup spans contemporary international cinema, acclaimed documentaries, beloved restorations, and special theatrical events. The month opens with National Theatre Live’s presentation of Inter Alia starring Rosamund Pike, alongside inventive new works from Mark Jenkin and Michael Sarnoski. New releases include Penny Lane’s stranger-than-fiction owl tale Wild Inside, Lucrecia Martel’s long-awaited investigative documentary Our Land (Nuestra Tierra), and a pair of ambitious new works from celebrated Japanese filmmakers: Hirokazu Kore-eda’s near-future fable Sheep in the Box and Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s historical mystery The Samurai and the Prisoner. Returning classics take center stage with new restorations of Jeong Jae-eun’s resonant coming-of-age drama Take Care of My Cat and Jane Campion’s Palme d’Or-winning masterpiece The Piano, while CatVideoFest 2026 brings family-friendly fun to the Noble Theater. The month also celebrates the work of pioneering documentarian Ross McElwee with a special two-film spotlight featuring the newly restored Sherman’s March and his deeply personal new feature Remake. Kent Jones’ warm and witty Late Fame, starring Willem Dafoe, rounds out a month of distinctive stories from some of contemporary cinema’s most compelling voices.
