From iconic writers and poets to tales of memory, identity, and reinvention, our September film lineup celebrates the power of big-screen storytelling in all its forms. Literary lives and legacies inspire Agnieszka Holland’s kaleidoscopic Franz, Sasha Waters’ moving documentary portrait of Mary Oliver, Matt Johnson’s Anthony Bourdain drama Tony, and the experimental mystery Chronovisor, while National Theatre Live’s thrilling production of Hamlet brings one of the greatest works of dramatic literature to the screen. The month also features acclaimed independent films including Oklahoma filmmaker Andrew Patterson’s genre-defying The Rivals of Amziah King, starring Matthew McConaughey, and Olivia Wilde’s sharply observed comedy The Invite. Rounding out the schedule is a new 4K restoration of Idrissa Ouédraogo’s African cinema landmark Samba Traoré, Film Society and Saturday Classics events showcasing two 1940s Hitchcock thrillers, and the return of beloved audience favorites CatVideoFest and the Manhattan Short Film Festival.
