Sacred Words: Tours, Classes, and Events

OKCMOA is excited to feature multiple learning activities and gallery experiences during  Sacred Words: The Saint John’s Bible and the Art of Illumination. Click on the titles below to register and discover the techniques and insights into this unique exhibition. EVENTS

SONIC FREE FAMILY DAY: THE ART OF THE BOOK
Sunday, November 13 | 12-5 pm
Enjoy free admission and a host of hands-on art projects and in-gallery experiences throughout the entire Museum. Featuring calligraphy demonstrations by Diane von Arx, Artist from The Saint John’s Bible

EXHIBITION LECTURE
Wednesday, November 30 | 6 pm
Making a Manuscript in the 21st Century: Reviving a Lost Art Presented by Fr. Eric Hollas, OSB, PhD
$5 for members; $9 for non-members.

Synopsis:   When scribes and artists sat down to create The Saint John’s Bible, they had no template or manual to which they could turn for guidance.  In the course of ten years, however, they learned what generations of scribes had once taken for granted.  This lecture examines the challenges they confronted as they fashioned a modern masterpiece of the book arts.

CALLIGRAPHY 101 WITH THE OKCMOA MODERNS
Learn from one of OKC’s leading calligraphers, Rachel Kathryn Designs, while trying your hand at the basics of modern, pointed pen calligraphy. Drinks and light bites will be available, and take-home supply kits will be included with the cost of admission for a special price of only $60 per person.*Please note: This event is limited to Moderns Members, plus one guest. Spots are limited and RSVPs are required.

Designed for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and their caregivers or loved ones.

SPECIAL GUEST TOURS
Saturday, October 15 | 10:30 am and 1:30 pm
Join an in-gallery tour led by Tim Ternes, Director of The Saint John’s Bible project. Two tour start times are available. Limited availability.

PUBLIC EXHIBITION TOURS
These in-gallery guided tours will provide conversation-based insights and close looking experiences. Choose from five dates below:

METROPOLITAN LIBRARY BOOK LIST
To supplement your visit, The Metropolitan Library System has compiled a list of resources covering illuminated manuscripts, religious texts, artistic techniques and more. Be sure to stop by your local branch to browse some of these materials. Also, don’t forget to visit the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library (located across the street from OKCMOA) to view reproductions of the Gutenberg Bible as well as the system’s very own copy of the Book of Hours dating back to 1451 A.D. Read more at metrolibrary.org
