Join OKCMOA and local artist Jennifer Perkins for a hands-on workshop celebrating the national flower of Puerto Rico—the Flor de Maga. Often mistaken for a hibiscus flower, the Flor de Maga can be found blooming on native maga trees year-round and features vivid red-pink petals and bright yellow pistils.
In this class, participants will learn how to create a lifelike Flor de Maga using fine crepe paper, focusing on petal shaping, color variation, and natural movement. Jennifer will guide students step-by-step through her professional process, demonstrating techniques for constructing delicate petals, sculpting centers, and assembling a realistic bloom inspired by the tropical flora of Puerto Rico. Inspired by The Sense of Beauty: Six Centuries of Painting from Museo de Arte de Ponce, this workshop offers a creative opportunity to celebrate the art, culture, and natural beauty of Puerto Rico through paper artistry.
This class is designed for ages 18+. All supplies will be provided.
For questions regarding the class or registration, please email Programs Manager Neely Simms at nsimms@okcmoa.com.
Bonus! Registrants ages 21+ are welcome to stop by the OKCMOA Bar before class and bring a drink to enjoy a relaxed paint-and-sip experience.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jennifer Perkins is a paper floral artist based in Oklahoma City. She creates handcrafted crepe paper flowers that explore the intersection of botanical realism and fine art. Her work is inspired by nature, classical still life painting, and the quiet beauty found in organic forms. Through careful attention to detail, color, and movement, Jennifer’s practice elevates paper into sculptural works that celebrate craftsmanship and slow making. Her floral pieces are often experienced as intimate studies of form, inviting viewers to pause and observe the subtle elegance of everyday blooms.
