You’re invited to join us for a comprehensive tour of Kiarostami: Beyond the Frame, led by the original exhibition’s two curators, Dr. Michael Anderson, President & CEO, and Dr. Lisa Broad, Head of Film Programming & Theatrical Operations. Organized by the Museum in collaboration with The Kiarostami Foundation, the immersive and thought-provoking Beyond the Frame is the first major American exhibition focusing on legendary Iranian filmmaker and artist Abbas Kiarostami since his death in 2016. On this tour, you will explore the dark alleys of an ancient village with the artist’s life-size Doors without Keys photographic installation; a snoozing couple’s bedroom through his Venice Biennale commission Sleepers; a darkened Iranian movie theater for the subtly provocative Shirin, presented with its revealing making-of documentary; and traditional art museum galleries for his Regardez-moi photographs, where the visitor will encounter a humorous and insightful survey of the history of European art, from the Renaissance to Post-Impressionism. As the exhibition’s photographs, videos, graphic artworks, and poems collectively attest, Kiarostami was one of the most staggering global artistic talents at the turn of the twenty-first century—despite the many challenges he faced in a society known for its heavy censorship.
Dr. Anderson has written about Kiarostami’s films in publications such as the Directory of World Cinema: Iran, and Dr. Broad has taught his work at NYU’s prestigious Tisch School of the Arts. Join them for this rare opportunity to learn much more about one of the greatest artistic figures of the past half century.
