The line between life and art all but disappears in the latest from Korea’s most acclaimed and prolific living director, Hong Sang-soo (Right Now, Wrong Then). Hong’s real-life girlfriend, Kim Minhee (The Handmaiden), stars as Younghee, an actress struggling in the aftermath of an affair with a married film director. Younghee visits Hamburg, before returning to Korea, where confessions follow the copious amounts of alcohol that Younghee consumes with her friends. Born out of Hong’s scandalous, Korean tabloid-fodder relationship with Kim, On the Beach at Night Alone serves as self-critical autobiography for Hong, even as it gives Kim her own voice in the affair’s aftermath. One of the most emotionally direct art-house films in ages, On the Beach at Night Alone is Kim’s film in the end, earning the beautiful Korean star the esteemed Best Actress prize at the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival.
