With The Third Murder, contemporary Japanese master and 2018 Palme d’Or winner Hirokazu Kore-eda (Still Walking, After the Storm) puts his graceful stamp on the murder mystery genre. Prominent lawyer Shigemori (Masaharu Fukuyama) travels to snowy Hokkaido to take on the defense of murder-robbery suspect, Misumi (Kiyoshi Kurosawa stalwart Kôji Yakusho), who served jail time for another murder 30 years ago. Shigemori’s chances of winning the case seem slim—his client freely admits his guilt, despite facing the death penalty. But as Shigemori digs deeper into case, the once confident attorney begins to doubt whether Misumi is the murderer after all. An exciting stylistic and thematic departure for Kore-eda—who built his international reputation on gentle, Ozu-inspired family dramas—this stylish, philosophical thriller benefits from his trademark attention to visual detail and psychological nuance. A work of precise and subtle craftsmanship, The Third Murder is effortlessly engaging and hard to shake.
