Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?:

Bachelors and Bombshells: Six Films by Frank Tashlin

New Restoration!

Saturday, June 17 | 8 pm

In danger of losing his firm’s biggest account, Stay-Put Lipstick, ambitious junior ad man, Rockwell P. Hunter (Tony Randall, The Odd Couple) pursues a lucrative endorsement deal with the owner of Hollywood’s most “kissable lips,” starlet Rita Marlowe (Jayne Mansfield). Marlowe accepts Hunter’s offer on the condition that he agree to pose as her lover in order to make her arrogant TV star boyfriend jealous. Before he knows it, Rock Hunter is the toast of the tabloids and the star of his ad agency, but his newfound success creates more problems than it solves. A stunningly self-aware skewering of advertising, celebrity culture, and the wildly expanding influence of television on Hollywood film and American popular culture, Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? is an ideal showcase for Frank Tashlin’s overheated visual style and his penchant for surreal visual puns that walk the line between juvenile and avant-garde.
